The Chief Executive, Mr. Li Ka-chao, visited Cyberport to tour the Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Center and learn about the development achievements of the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
On November 22, 2024, Chief Executive Li Ka-chiu visited Cyberport today (November 22) to visit the Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Center and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, learn about the latest developments and achievements of the Cyberport Artificial Intelligence ecosystem, and listen to the sharing of artificial intelligence companies on their landing experience in Cyberport, how Cyberport supports their research and business development, and the positive impact of scientific research results on enhancing smart cities and promoting the digital economy. Accompanying him were Professor Sun Dong, Director of the Innovation and Technology Bureau, Mr. Wong Chi Kwong, Commissioner for Digital Policy, Mr. Chen Sai-ming, Chairman of Cyberport, and Dr. Zheng Songyan, CEO.
Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Carrie Lam, said, "My team and I are working hard to build Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology center. The synergy between government, industry, academia, and research is crucial, and the SAR government has been implementing a comprehensive strategy to enhance the innovation and technology ecosystem. Artificial intelligence is a key driver of the new wave of industrial revolution and digital economic development. Hong Kong must seize the opportunities and further enhance its competitiveness and innovation capacity. I encourage different industries in Hong Kong to unleash their creativity and promote the comprehensive application of artificial intelligence through the thriving AI ecosystem in Hong Kong."
Chairman Chen Ximing of Cyberport said, "As the core base for the development of artificial intelligence in Hong Kong, Cyberport is committed to enhancing the advantages of Hong Kong's artificial intelligence industry and building a complete artificial intelligence ecosystem powered by the largest supercomputing center in Hong Kong. We appreciate the SAR Government's support for the promotion of the artificial intelligence industry. The first phase of the supercomputing center's facilities will soon be launched. In conjunction with the SAR Government's artificial intelligence funding scheme, the first batch of funded projects will be announced to support the strong computing power needs of local universities, research institutions, and related companies, enhancing research and development capabilities, promoting scientific breakthroughs, and accelerating industrial development."
Dr. Lee George Lam, Chairman of Cyberport, said that the Cyberport Supercomputing Center aims to provide advanced computing power for Hong Kong's AI industry and research and development. The initial facility was expected to provide about 300 PFLOPS of computing power. Considering the huge demand from the scientific research community and the need to accelerate the supply of computing power, Cyberport strives to increase the total computing power capacity of the Supercomputing Center to 1,300 PFLOPS as soon as possible within this year, and gradually increase it to 3,000 PFLOPS by 2025 to meet the urgent demand for computing power in the technology industry.
The Computing Power level that can be provided by the Digital Hub Supercomputing Center is estimated to be equivalent to processing nearly 10 billion images in one hour, over 11 million hours of voice translation, and processing of over 40,000 kilometers of autonomous driving artificial intelligence data. The supercomputing center will promote the development and research of higher-end and complex artificial intelligence, greatly reducing model training time. To accommodate the major trend of artificial intelligence development, the Digital Hub has established an Artificial Intelligence Laboratory to provide an interactive space for showcasing AI solutions, releasing service products, and promoting AI-related research and cooperation. It also provides a platform for AI ecosystem partners and enterprises to experience different supercomputing tools, jointly explore product innovation and integration technology, and apply them to different industries and scenarios, promoting the transformation and landing of innovative technology to drive the development of the digital economy and smart cities.
During the visit to the AI Lab at the Cyberport, the Chief Executive listened to the experiences and R&D achievements shared by representatives from multiple AI companies at the Cyberport, including local startups such as Weitu AI showcasing its AI video assistant product, Votee AI demonstrating its Cantonese AI chatbot, mainland leading enterprise iFLYTEK exhibiting its Spark Composition Correction application, and China Film demonstrating its AI dynamic video animation product. Cyberport actively builds a complete AI ecosystem around the supercomputing center, covering Computing Power, general and professional large models, model risk assessment, industry application support, governance and ethical research, gathering talents and innovative resources from the mainland and overseas to support innovative R&D and application at different stages of the AI ecosystem, promoting industrial development. Currently, Cyberport has attracted over 330 startups focusing on AI and big data R&D, including a number of key enterprises that have invested in Hong Kong, contributing funds, technology, and talent to develop international headquarters, internationalizing AI products and services, connecting with overseas funds in Hong Kong, and promoting international business through Hong Kong's international platform.
