In a move that some considered surprising, Brad Garlinghouse, the CEO of digital asset company Ripple Labs and the holder of a large amount of XRP cryptocurrency, clarified his stance on bitcoin ( BTC ). "The first time I bought bitcoin was in 2012 after an event when I was first introduced to it," Garlinghouse explained. "And I am very optimistic about bitcoin, period," he added. Garlinghouse made remarks on Wednesday at the Blockworks digital asset summit in New York City during a fireside chat with Hunter Horsely, CEO of cryptocurrency investment firm Bitwise. Many in the Bitcoin community disdain XRP because 80% of the token supply was gifted to Ripple, effectively granting control of the asset to the company. Garlinghouse even went further to say that he is a holder of BTC. "I have used bitcoin for various transactions, but I haven't sold it," he said.
