Ether坊Pectra upgrade postponed again! The third testnet Hooli will go live, and the Mainnet upgrade will be as soon as 4/25
After issues on both the Holesky and Sepolia Testnets during the Ethereum Pectra upgrade, Ethereum core developers decided on Thursday to launch a new Testnet, Hooli, on the 17th to perform a final code update verification before the official deployment. The Pectra upgrade could potentially go live on the Ethereum Mainnet as early as April 25. (Recap: Ethereum Pectra Mainnet upgrade delayed! Foundation initiates additional testing, ETH falls to yearly low) (Background: Ethereum Pectra test encounters errors again! Mainnet upgrade in April may be delayed, ETH market sentiment hits rock bottom) Ethereum core developers decided on Thursday to create the third Testnet, Hoodi, to better prepare for the Pectra upgrade. Previously, the first two Testnets, Holesky and Sepolia, encountered multiple errors leading to a delay in the Pectra upgrade to at least the end of April. Hoodi Testnet launched on 3/17. Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko mentioned after the "Ethereum All Core Dev Call" meeting on the 13th that the Hoodi Testnet will be launched on March 17, and the Pectra upgrade will go live on that Testnet on March 26. ACDE Recap A new testnet, Hoodi, is going live Monday to wrap up Pectra testing, if you need to test validator exits, be on the lookout for it! Everything else can be tested on Sepolia & Holesky. Pectra will be scheduled 30+ days after Hoodi forks successfully, pending infra... Tim Beiko stated that if Pectra runs smoothly on the Hoodi Testnet without major issues, core developers could potentially confirm the Mainnet upgrade date within 30 days after the Pectra upgrade goes live on Hoodi. This means that Pectra could potentially go live on the Ethereum Mainnet as early as April 25. Pectra integrates the originally planned Prague and Electra upgrades, implementing over 10 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). The main goal is to bring more functionality to Ethereum wallets and improve user experience. Additionally, the upgrade will include scalability proposals to increase the number of Blob transactions per Block from 3 to 6 to enhance network processing capabilities. Multiple delays for the Pectra upgrade Initially planned to go live on the Ethereum Mainnet by the end of 2024, the Pectra upgrade has been delayed multiple times due to client preparation issues and synchronization errors on the first two Testnets, Holesky and Sepolia. Coindesk reported that due to configuration errors in the previous Holesky and Sepolia Testnets, proper testing of Pectra could not be conducted. In particular, the testing issues on the Holesky Testnet led to the network being offline for weeks, affecting progress. Tim Beiko noted that currently Pectra is running smoothly on Sepolia and Holesky, but the goals of these two Testnets are different: If you need to test validators' exit mechanisms, follow Hooli, while other tests can still be conducted on Sepolia and Holesky. Christine Kim, Vice President of Research at Galaxy Digital, stated that the Hoodi Testnet will simulate the operation of the Ethereum Mainnet as closely as possible and will launch validators similar to Mainnet, distributing at least 20 million test staked ETH to 11 client teams and 5 stake operators. Technical challenges for Pectra arise at a difficult time for Ethereum, facing pressure from various sources including the price drop of ETH, internal leadership changes in the Ethereum Foundation, intensifying competition from emerging chains like Solana, etc. Many industry experts believe that the successful implementation of Pectra is crucial to restoring confidence in Ethereum's technical roadmap.
