BREAKING NEWS: Will Donald Trump Make a Move for FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried This Time? His Family Takes Action
According to sources close to the matter, it is reported that the parents of FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried have requested a possible pardon from President Donald Trump for their son.
Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fraud, is currently appealing his 2023 conviction related to the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange.
Stanford Law School professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried met with lawyers and people close to Trump's inner circle in recent weeks to discuss a possible pardon for their 32-year-old son. However, it remains unclear whether there has been any official access to the White House.
Neither Bankman nor Fried commented on the matter and Bankman-Fried's legal team did not respond to comment requests. The White House also declined to make a statement.
Trump's willingness to use his pardon power in the early days of his presidency, including pardoning Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, has led to an increase in pardon requests from white-collar criminals. Bankman-Fried, once regarded as a visionary in the cryptocurrency sector, may now be seeking to address Trump, who has turned from a crypto skeptic to a strong advocate of digital assets.
Unlike Ulbricht, who received significant public support from the crypto and libertarian communities, Bankman-Fried has not yet garnered widespread support for clemency. However, considering that a significant portion of FTX customers have recovered a substantial amount of the funds they lost, he argued that his punishment is excessively harsh. It was reported that former FTX executive Ryan Salame, who was sentenced to seven years in prison, also requested clemency.
