Founder of Ether Square criticizes Vitalik Musk's H-1B radical remarks: Do not abuse the power of speech, please be more open-minded
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin tweeted on 1/1, calling on Elon Musk to calmly handle the recent controversy surrounding H-1B visas for foreign tech workers. At the same time, Vitalik also reminded Musk that overly aggressive rhetoric could cause long-term harm to freedom of speech and public discussion.
H1B visa dispute sparks public opinion war, Musk defends to the end
The incident began with Musk's tweet on 12/28 in support of H-1B visas for foreign technical professionals, stating that American companies have the right to hire foreign technical personnel. Musk, who was previously a South African national, expressed his dissatisfaction, saying, "The reason I came to the United States with so many elite professionals and then established SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that make America strong is because of H-1B. Those of you who oppose H-1B had better figure out what you're talking about. I will definitely fight to the end on this issue."
Musk explodes on Twitter, opposing H-1B visa holders.
However, this statement has caused considerable dissatisfaction among some conservative supporters of Trump, who believe that this is not conducive to the employment conditions of American citizens. According to foreign media reports, some conservative people claim that their advanced Twitter account functions have been restricted because of their criticism of Musk, accusing Musk's social media platform of implementing speech censorship.
Musk's radical remarks provoke a response from Vitalik
Elon Musk's radical remarks on Twitter also prompted Ethereum co-founder Vitalik to respond to the post, appreciating Musk's courage in fighting for freedom of speech, but also warning: "The challenge of respecting freedom of speech is that even if we don't like certain remarks, we must still uphold their right to exist."
Vitalik added, 'If the power of discourse is in the hands of one group today, it could fall into the hands of another group tomorrow.' Vitalik believes that abusing the power of discourse will only lead to three situations in the degradation of public discussion:
Fragmentation: differing opinions, each going their own way.
Monoculture: The person who dominates the discourse suppresses all opposing voices.
Full confrontation: stuck in endless conflict.
Vitalik calls on Musk to be more enlightened as a leader
Vitalik emphasized that as a leader, any small or large remarks are crucial to the social atmosphere, and should be used to promote human well-being, rather than causing opposition. He said that Musk's radical remarks are not the best way to help human civilization progress, and that a more positive and constructive way should be used to communicate, rather than relying on the right to speak on social media to suppress different voices. Musk has not yet responded to Vitalik's suggestion regarding this public opinion storm.
Vitalik responds that Musk needs to be open-minded and face different opinions.
