FSC: Institutional investors, high net worth clients, etc. can invest in cryptocurrency ETFs

The FSC announced at the end of September that it will allow professional investors to entrust the investment of foreign virtual asset ETFs. Considering the complex nature and drastic price fluctuations of virtual assets, the investment risk of virtual asset ETFs is relatively high. Therefore, only professional institutional investors, high-net-worth investment corporations, high-asset clients, legal persons or funds belonging to professional investors, and natural persons belonging to professional investors are allowed to invest in this type of ETFs. All types of professional investors, except for institutional-level investors, are required to sign a risk disclosure statement.

On December 24, Yuanta Securities announced that qualified investors can trade virtual asset ETFs through the company's delegated trading. In practice, Yuanta Securities stipulates that investors must be professional investors. Before trading, they should confirm the customer's risk level to match the commodity, have sufficient investment experience and professional knowledge of virtual assets, and sign a risk disclosure statement. Only when all of the above are met can an order be placed.

And currently, Yuanta Securities has listed more than 70 ETFs on the US stock market, and the trading process and rules are the same as general US stock ETFs. Whether it is IBIT, which tracks the price of Bitcoin, BITO, which tracks the price of Bitcoin futures, or ETH, which tracks the price of Ether, they are all available for trading as ETFs.

Bitcoin performance in 2024 is popular, but risks still need to be considered

Yuanta Securities pointed out that although the cryptocurrency market is popular in 2024 and attracts a large number of investors, investors should also be aware of the potential risks. Cryptocurrencies have extremely high volatility and dramatic price changes, which may pose significant investment risks. In addition, regulatory policies on cryptocurrencies are constantly changing in countries around the world, and this uncertainty increases investment risks. Although cryptocurrencies provide new investment opportunities, caution must still be exercised and potential risks fully understood and prepared for.

Is it better to invest in Bitcoin with micro-strategies? ETF? Or hold spot positions?

As for whether traditional financial investors should invest in Bitcoin, or hold it in the form of ETF, or directly buy spot. Regardless of legal requirements, asset management companies, such as BlackRock, the issuer of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, suggest allocating 1-2% of Bitcoin in investment positions. This is equivalent to the barbell strategy mentioned in the book 'Antifragile', where the downside risk of the position is controllable, but there is an opportunity to strive for higher returns compared to traditional targets.

Renowned financial podcast host Xie Menggong, in a previous Q&A session, responded to a listener's question about whether to invest in micro-strategies or virtual asset ETFs, stating that he did not invest in related targets. However, if he truly believes in Bitcoin, he thinks that holding spot directly would be better than holding indirectly.
