Trump considers establishing White House AI czar, united Cryptocurrency to ensure US technological leadership
According to reports, President-elect Trump is considering establishing a White House artificial intelligence (AI) czar role to coordinate federal policy and government applications in emerging technology fields. Sources revealed that this role aims to strengthen America's global leadership position in AI technology.
Trump appoints senior policy new trends: may establish AI czar
Trump's transition team says there is a high possibility of establishing an AI czar, but it has not been confirmed yet. This role will be responsible for integrating public and private resources to ensure that the United States stays at the forefront of AI development.
Why is it called AI czar?
In American political parlance, the term 'czar' is an informal title used to appoint senior officials responsible for managing specific policy areas. Although this term is associated with autocratic rulers in Russian history, in the American context, it refers to a coordinator or leader who specializes in handling certain issues. This usage can be traced back to at least the 1940s when President Roosevelt appointed officials to oversee various aspects of the wartime economy, and these officials were referred to as 'czars' by the media.
This term has been in use for decades to describe characters such as "drug czar," referring to the head of a national drug control policy office, and "cybersecurity czar," the official in charge of computer security policy. This usage itself does not carry a negative connotation, but rather indicates that a person is given broad authority to coordinate efforts in a specific area.
In this context, appointing an 'AI czar' means designating a leader to coordinate federal-level AI policy and advocacy. The role aims to integrate efforts across government departments in AI, ensuring policy coherence and effective implementation. In this scenario, the use of the term 'czar' reflects the intention to centralize leadership and oversight in a specific domain to address the rapidly evolving field of AI.
Musk will not serve as the AI czar, but will involve Depth.
While Tesla's founder Musk may not serve as the AI czar, he is expected to involve Depth in relevant policy discussions and use case development. Musk currently co-leads the newly established 'Department of Government Efficiency' (DOGE) with Vivek Ramaswamy, which wields significant influence over the AI czar candidate. However, industry competitors are concerned that Musk may leverage his relationship with Trump to benefit his company.
(Trump nominated Musk and Ramaswamy to lead the "Department of Government Efficiency DOGE" to reshape government structure)
The dual-track advancement of emerging technology: Is there also a Cryptocurrency czar?
According to Bloomberg, the Trump team is also considering the creation of the first White House cryptocurrency czar. The two positions may be merged into an "emerging technology czar" with unified responsibility for policy promotion and coordination of AI and encryption technologies. Such a role would help integrate technology resources and maintain a leading position for the United States in emerging technologies.
The core responsibilities and origins of the White House AI Tsar
The AI Tsar will coordinate AI applications across federal agencies, working with existing agency AI leads. These roles were established in Biden administration's AI executive order and may continue from the Trump administration. In addition, the role will also collaborate with DOGE to use AI technology to eliminate waste and fraud in government, including welfare fraud.
To support the continuous development of AI technology, the government needs to expand energy supply and attract a large amount of private investment. This will further consolidate the technological advantage of the United States and ensure the innovation and rise of relevant industries.
The establishment of AI Tsar was also inspired by Trump's proposal for a national energy commission. The commission will be chaired by Doug Burgum, the nominee for Trump's Secretary of the Interior and the Governor of North Dakota. Members include Trump's nominee for Secretary of Energy and Chris Wright, a executive in the shale gas industry. The goal of the energy commission is to streamline processes, attract investment, and promote innovation, which could serve as a reference framework for the establishment of AI Tsar.
Unlike other roles that require confirmation from the Senate, the AI czar does not require Senate approval, meaning that the role can be put into action more quickly to advance the new government's AI policies. This flexibility could make it a powerful weapon for the Trump administration in the field of technology.
