X (Twitter) Has Officially Stopped NFT Profile Photo Service!
Social media giant X has discontinued its NFT profile picture service, which it launched in January 2022 last year. The crypto community's reaction to this move, which Kraken founder Jesse Powell described as "a step backwards for the industry", drew attention.
The X social media platform, which was acquired by Elon Musk, attracted attention with its move to remove the NFT profile feature. Previously, X allowed its subscribers to use an Ethereum-based NFT as their profile picture on X. In September 2021, when it was known as Twitter, X** activated NFTs and Bitcoin (BTC) tips. Introduced in January 2022, the NFT profile extension expanded in October 2022 when the social media company introduced "NFT Tweet Tiles."
Developer Jimmy Song wrote on X, "Hexagonal NFT profile pictures are gone from X. Prices are down 90%+," he said. "Where are all those marketers and VC s who said 3 years ago that NFTs were such a great thing with so many use cases?" asked Song.
Udi Wertheimer, co-founder of Taproot Wizards, joined the conversation on the topic and jokingly said, "X (Twitter) is removing support for legacy Ethereum off-chain beacons." Jesse Powell, the founder of Kraken, also raised the issue. "The discontinuation of support for NFT profile pictures on @X is a step backwards for the industry. Reduced benefit is always a loss," he said.
