Recently, while participating in discussions in some Web3 communities, I heard someone liken the protective mechanisms in certain protocols to 'airbags'. This analogy struck me and I found it very fitting.
In traditional finance, we are accustomed to various security guarantees. However, in the world of decentralized finance (DeFi), risks are often laid bare. We frequently hear news of the total value locked (TVL) of projects suddenly dropping to zero, or investors suffering heavy losses. Over time, many people have become numb to this situation, but behind this numbness lies helplessness and despair.
However, some emerging DeFi protocols are attempting to change this situation. They considered long-term stability from the very beginning of their design, rather than short-term gains. The protective mechanisms in these protocols provide users with a sense of security, much like airbags in cars. While we all hope to never need to activate these mechanisms, knowing they exist certainly brings a sense of reassurance.
This shift in design philosophy actually reflects the maturity of the DeFi industry. It is no longer just a high-risk, high-reward investment venue, but is beginning to consider how to establish a sustainable ecosystem. This long-term consideration can not only attract more users but also enhance user trust and loyalty.
For users, this change signifies a shift in mindset. In the face of market fluctuations, we no longer only consider whether we should withdraw, but instead think more about how the protocol itself will respond. This sense of trust makes people more willing to hold long-term and participate.
Overall, DeFi is moving towards a new stage. In this stage, protocols are no longer solely focused on short-term high returns, but are beginning to emphasize the establishment of long-term, stable relationships. This shift may be the key to DeFi truly becoming a mainstream financial choice.
