OpenAI Responded Harshly to Its Own Stock's Cryptocurrency Initiative! "Be Careful"
Robinhood, which focuses on crypto assets, has started to introduce its new products in Europe and is offering its users tokenized versions of OpenAI and SpaceX stocks. However, OpenAI has strongly opposed this initiative.
OpenAI stated on X, formerly known as Twitter (, "These 'OpenAI tokens' are not OpenAI stock. We have no partnership with Robinhood, we are not involved in this process, and we do not endorse this product."
The company also stated that the transfer of its shares is only possible with its own approval, warning that "Any transfer of shares requires our approval; we have not approved any transfers. Please be careful."
Robinhood, on the other hand, introduced its new crypto and blockchain-focused products in Cannes, France. The company drew attention with tokenized stocks, staking services, and a new blockchain infrastructure initiative. Following the announcement, Robinhood shares rose above 100 dollars, reaching an all-time high.
A spokesperson from Robinhood responded to OpenAI's statement, saying, "These tokens create new opportunities for individual investors by providing indirect access to private markets. The tokens are offered through a special purpose company based on the shares we own."
Robinhood distributed tokens worth 5 euros each of OpenAI and SpaceX to eligible users who registered for stock tokens purchases by July 7, under more flexible investor regulations in the European Union. The tokens are offered through the company's crypto platform.
Robinhood's Crypto General Manager Johann Kerbrat stated, "Our goal is to broaden access. We want everyone to be able to participate in this economy through tokenization."
However, this development once again highlighted the clash between the efforts of crypto platforms to democratize access to financial products and the desire of the companies underlying these products to maintain control. Due to regulatory restrictions in the U.S., American users cannot access the tokens in question.
