The U.S. government is scaling back its trade agreement goals, aiming to reach a partial consensus before July 9.
According to the Gate News bot, the Financial Times reported that senior U.S. trade officials are adjusting their strategy, abandoning the goal of a comprehensive equivalence agreement and instead seeking to reach a narrower trade agreement to avoid re-imposing tariffs. Four sources revealed that the U.S. is discussing a phased agreement with the most engaged countries and hopes to achieve results by July 9.
This new plan indicates that the White House has given up on the intention to reach 90 trade agreements during the 90-day tariff suspension period, but it provides an opportunity for some countries to reach moderate agreements. According to informed sources, BRICS countries are striving to reach a "principled agreement" on a few trade disputes before the deadline.
Countries that agree to these narrower protocols will be exempt from more stringent countervailing tariffs but will still have to pay the existing 10% basic tariff. At the same time, negotiations on more contentious issues are still ongoing. However, the negotiation process remains complex, and the U.S. government is still considering imposing tariffs on key industries.
