U.S. prosecutors intervene in the FTX case, proposing a settlement without trial.
Gate News bot news: Former Chairman of the SEC and current Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), Jay Clayton, stated that parties involved may be discussing a "potential resolution" related to the criminal case against Michelle Bond. Michelle Bond is the wife of Ryan Salame, the former co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets.
Klaytn submitted a document to the Southern District Court of New York on Thursday, requesting the court to postpone the case for seven days under the Speedy Trial Act, so that both parties could focus on discussions and reach a settlement without a court hearing. Not long before this, Bond's lawyer also requested a three-day extension. Judge George Daniels agreed to this request, canceled the hearing originally scheduled for July 15, and rescheduled the debate for July 22.
Klayton wrote: "Postponing the trial will help ensure justice, and its benefits outweigh the speed of trial, as it allows both parties to finalize documents, consider legal strategies, and negotiate possible solutions."
Michelle Bond was indicted in August 2024 for violating campaign finance regulations during the 2022 House election. Her attorney argued that one of the charges should be dismissed because, as part of a verbal plea agreement with Salam, prosecutors promised not to pursue criminal charges against Bond.
This letter from Clayton is one of the few times he has intervened in cryptocurrency-related cases since taking office in April. He can continue to serve until August 20 without Senate approval.
Bond's husband Ryan Salame was sentenced to over seven years in prison in May 2024 under a plea agreement. He and Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) are the only ones charged, yet he did not testify in the highly publicized trial of the former FTX CEO. Although Salame attempted to withdraw his plea agreement on the grounds of the prosecutor's promise not to prosecute his wife, he later retracted his plea and began serving his sentence in October 2024.
This is one of the last few criminal cases related to the collapse of the FTX exchange in 2022. Meanwhile, SBF, Salame, and former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison are all serving time. Two other former FTX executives, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, have pleaded guilty and have been sentenced to prison.
