Citibank is being sued for allegedly allowing a $20 million cryptocurrency romance scam to occur. The plaintiff, Michael Zidell, stated that he was persuaded to invest in NFTs after meeting someone named "Carolyn Parker" on Facebook.

He transferred a total of 20 million USD through 43 transactions, including nearly 4 million USD to an account at Citibank. The lawsuit claims that Citibank ignored unusual signs such as large, round, and frequent amounts being transferred into the account of Guju Inc., indicating suspicious activity. Zidell accuses the bank of lacking oversight responsibility and having facilitated fraudulent behavior. In 2023, cryptocurrency romance scams caused losses of over 5.5 billion USD. In 2024 alone, the total value of digital currency scams is estimated to reach 12.4 billion USD.
