The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) is preparing to study how cryptocurrency holdings can be considered in the mortgage qualification approval process.

FHFA is an independent regulatory agency that oversees key components of the housing market in America, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Bank system.

"We will study the use of cryptocurrency assets related to the requirements for mortgage lending," FHFA Director Bill Pulte posted on social media X on Tuesday.

The federal housing authority's consideration of incorporating cryptocurrency into the mortgage approval process demonstrates the increasing acceptance of digital assets in the traditional financial system, in line with the growing trend of crypto integration in the broader fintech sector.

However, the FHFA Director has not provided further details on the scope of the study, the specific types of cryptocurrencies that may be considered, or the timeline for implementing the plan.

Pulte took on the position of director in March of this year after being nominated by President Donald Trump in January. He had expressed interest in the cryptocurrency sector since 2019, when he announced the purchase of 11 Bitcoin.

According to the financial statement released in February, the FHFA Director stated that he holds Bitcoin and Solana with a total value ranging from 500,001 to 1 million USD. He also owns shares of MARA Holdings, a company focused on Bitcoin mining.
